How to get more fiber into your diet "fibermaxxing" – without your stomach protesting

On TikTok and Instagram there's a lot of talk about “fibermaxxing” – that is, maximizing your fiber intake. In Sweden we may not use the same word, but the idea is familiar: we simply need to eat more fiber.

According to the National Food Agency adults should eat 25–35 gram fiber per day, which corresponds to about 500 gram fruit and vegetables. Most of us fall short – so how do you increase intake without upsetting your stomach?

Why fiber is important
Fiber contributes to satiety, makes blood sugar rise more slowly and helps digestion work properly. It also becomes easier to maintain a varied diet when fiber is a natural part of meals.

Common mistakes when starting to eat more fiber

  • Too much, too fast → the stomach becomes gassy or bloated.
  • Too little fluid → fiber binds water and needs fluids to work.
  • Lack of variety → only one type of fiber (e.g. bread) doesn't have the same effect as a mix of fruit, vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

How to get more fiber – the right way

  • Increase gradually – add a little more fruit, vegetables or legumes each day.
  • Drink enough water – at least 1.5–2 liters per day.
  • Mix sources – think rainbow on your plate: berries, root vegetables, greens, whole grains.
