Vad är Ceylonkanel? – Den äkta och milda kanelen

`What is Ceylon cinnamon? – The authentic, mild cinnamon`

Ceylon cinnamon is one of the world's most prized spices and has been used in cooking for thousands of years. The spice comes from the thin inner bark of Cinnamomum verum, a cinnamon tree that mainly grows in Sri Lanka – which is why Ceylon cinnamon is often called "true cinnamon".

In stores, however, it is common to find cassia cinnamon, which has a stronger taste, thicker bark and a considerably higher content of the natural compound coumarin. Ceylon cinnamon instead has a mild, sweet and aromatic profile that makes it especially appreciated in smoothies, baked goods, hot drinks and superfood blends.

When the cinnamon bark is harvested it is cut into thin rolls that are dried – it is these rolls or the ground form we most often encounter in stores.

Ceylon cinnamon vs. Cassia cinnamon – what is the difference?

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)

  • Growing region: Sri Lanka
  • Bark: thin, many layers
  • Taste: mild, sweet, aromatic
  • Naturally low coumarin content

Cassia cinnamon

  • Origin: Indonesia, Vietnam, China
  • Bark: thick and robust
  • Taste: strong and intense
  • Significantly higher coumarin content

Because coumarin is not recommended in large amounts, many consumers choose to use Ceylon cinnamon in everyday life – especially if they use cinnamon often.

In all our superfood products we use only organic Ceylon cinnamon.

What does Ceylon cinnamon contain?

Although cinnamon is mainly used for flavor, it naturally contains small amounts of, among other things:

  • Calcium
  • Manganese
  • Iron
  • Fiber
  • Flavanols
  • Polyphenols
  • Antioxidant plant compounds

How is Ceylon cinnamon used?

Ceylon cinnamon is a true flavor enhancer. It:

  • adds warmth and sweetness to smoothies
  • is perfect in porridge, baked goods and snacks
  • rounds off hot drinks like tea and golden milk
  • balances fruity and nutty flavors

Its mild character means it also works well in recipes where you want to avoid the sharp taste of cassia cinnamon.
